Ray and John

Yes, it's open for business! The newest development in the Parish of Myland opened its gates on Monday, 4th August 2008, when Colchester United hosted Athletic Bilbao - and we were there!

Ray and John are season ticket holders at the U's, and were delighted to be present at the very start of the new era in Col U's history. Ray's the one on the left - and that's NOT John on the right!

This was the moment when it all kicked off - Athletic Bilbao kicked the first ball in the inaugural friendly match, playing to a crowd of almost 6,000 in what was officially a "ramp-up" event to test all the logistical arrangements at the stadium. Revd Ray Gibbs, Myland's Priest-in-Charge, commented: "The amount of work that had to be done in just over a year, to create the venue and all its features, was quite immense, and it's
wonderful to see it all coming together". As a member of the Stadium Stakeholders Group, Ray has watched progress closely and is clearly delighted with the result. It's more than a venue for football, though; as the name declares, it's a community facility, and our Curate, Revd John Chandler, says "we're looking forward to playing our part in making the stadium a success, not only by supporting the U's, but by encouraging its use by the wider community".

We expected Athletic Bilbao to be strong opposition, and we lost the match 2-1. However, this is the moment Scott Vernon scored the U's first goal, from the penalty spot. Our task now, as members of the community, is to make sure there are many more happy occasions for us all at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Come on the U's!
