Background to the project’s work area
In
2001 with a population of around 6200 Mile End was already changing from
being a semi rural community (1970 population c. 2500) to
almost 10,000 today and is projected to be in excess of 17000
within 10 years due to development and planned regeneration.
There
is currently no post office service, only one school (many primary age
children go to schools outside the area), the loss of several social
clubs, a major new road that divides the area in half both physically and
psychologically, no spare capacity in the 2 small Church halls for
activities or meetings (one of which needs funding to upgrade its
facilities to meet current standards), and the loss of shops and
businesses due to the Nayland road bus gate. All
these factors mean the area is in desperate need of improved social
infrastructure.
