The Parish of Myland
The Church of England Parish of Myland is a diverse and dynamic community located on the north west side of Colchester. The parish largely follows the boundaries of the Myland Community Council (the municipal parish), has grown significantly in recent decades and continues to grow. The population is currently in the region of 25,000.
Areas in Myland
The parish contains the long-established areas of Mile End and Braiswick along with several more recent housing developments, some of which are still being built. These newer developments are: Severalls (including Rosewood and Kingswood Heath) and The Myle & Cuckoo Point to the north; Romans to the north east; Turner Rise and Northfields further south; the Northern Approaches along the A134 link (Via Urbis Romanae) to the A12; New Braiswick Park to the south west; and Chesterwell on land to the north west between Nayland Road and Bergholt Road.
Business and enterprise
There are a number of hospitals and care homes within the parish, including Colchester General Hospital; and many businesses, such as the smaller enterprises along Nayland Road and Mile End Road, and the retail park (with a large ASDA store) at Turner Rise. To the north of the parish is a growing area of larger commercial units and light industry including the Flakt Woods factory and car showrooms; as well as the Jobserve Community Stadium – home to Colchester United.
Transport links
In the south of the parish is the main Colchester railway station (also known as Colchester North) with services to London, Norwich, Clacton and Walton-on-the Naze as well as to Colchester Town (St. Botolph's) station in the centre of Colchester. In addition, the parish is served by several buses connecting to various places in and around the town.
In the north, the parish is bordered by the A12, which can be accessed at Junction 28 via the A134/Northern Approach Road/Via Urbis Romanae.
Education
The parish has four primary schools: Myland School, Queen Boudica School, Braiswick School and Camulos Academy. A secondary school is planned as part of the new Chesterwell development.
Nature
Much of the High Woods Country Park is within the parish boundaries. The park is a protected area of woodland, open space, meadows and a lake, managed by Colchester Borough Council. It is a haven for a plethora of flora and fauna, and a popular place for walking, cycling, rest and recreation.
