Our history

We are indebted to two people for their knowledge of Myland, and for providing this history of our parish.

First we have a summary covering 1254-1871, written by Patrick Mills in 2013. Then we have the foreword and sections from the History of Myland Church, published in 1980 by Marjorie I. Richardson.  It follows the development of Christian worship in the parish from 1351 to 1980. A printed booklet entitled A History of the Parish of Myland is available in the church, which combines both Patrick’s and Marjorie’s work.

Click on the tabs above to see the stages and ages of our development. At the end, we provide the latest list we have of all the known rectors of the Parish of Myland over the hundreds of years we have been here. So you see the Church has had a presence and history of serving the community in this area for a long time – from small rural beginnings to the ever growing urbanised area we live in now!

We hope you find our history interesting; and if you think you have any further information to contribute, please do let us know.

The photograph below is courtesy of Patricia Ellis, great-great-granddaughter of the Reverend Edmund Hall who was the rector of this parish 1855 - 1903. It shows Mile End Road in 1905! The Church spire and the School (shortly to be replaced by the new Myland School, and would eventually become Myland Parish Halls) are just visible.
